Empowering Future-Ready Graduates Through STEM Experiences

Careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) continue to grow. At Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County, kids get access to technology and programs that ignite an interest in STEM concepts.  
 
One of our top priorities is ensuring all youth have the tools and support to be successful both in life and at school. Afterschool academic support helps kids stay on track throughout the school year, while fun and engaging summer programming combats summer learning loss in areas like math, reading and STEM.  
 
Research shows that when we support and encourage youth academically, they’re more likely to graduate from high school on time, consider postsecondary education or training, and identify a career path that aligns with their interests. 
 
But we know it takes a lot to make the grade. Boys & Girls Clubs’ evidence-informed academic enrichment programs build on what young people are learning in school and help them discover topics they’re passionate about. By igniting their curiosity and excitement, Clubs help kids stay engaged with what they’re learning and connect their interests to future career paths. 
Fewer than half of the schools in the US offer computer science classes.

According to a 2020 study sponsored by Code.org, fewer than half of US schools offer computer science curriculum. That begs the question: are kids going to be ready to meet the evolving, growing landscape of STEM professions.

Evidence suggests that by participating in STEM summer programs, underrepresented communities of students are more likely to graduate from high school, attend four-year colleges, and earn STEM degrees.

According to a recent study, students who participated in STEM summer programs boosted their chances of earning a STEM degree and graduating from high school. The most significant increase in STEM degree attainment, 33%, reflected the group who

74% of middle school girls express an interest in engineering, science, and math…

But only 0.4% choose computer science as a major when they get to college.
