This summer, two inspiring teens from the Middlebury Boys & Girls Club had the unique opportunity to attend the 2025 National Keystone Conference in Chicago, an experience that left them energized and ready to take on new challenges.

The Keystone Club, designed for young people aged 14 to 18, focuses on academic success, career preparation, and community service. This year’s conference provided a rich environment for personal growth, leadership development, and networking. The teens engaged in workshops centered on mental health, interview skills, and effective leadership, equipping them with tools to thrive in their future endeavors.

While at the conference, attendees were treated to professional headshots and a chance to explore the college and career expo, helping them to envision their paths after high school. Additionally, they participated in social events that fostered connections with other Boys & Girls Clubs that achieved Gold and Legacy charter levels, reinforcing the spirit of collaboration and shared success.

Nick Sherk, the Teen Program Manager for the Middlebury Club, expressed his excitement about the event, noting, “The 2025 National Keystone Conference is a great way for our teens to branch out of their own small community and meet new Club members from around the nation. I found myself learning just as much as the teens and enjoyed hanging out with them most of all.”

Brennan Yoder, the High School Supervisor, attended the conference for the first time and shared his reflections. “I didn’t know what to expect, but once we got there, I realized this program is bigger than us. It’s about the teens learning leadership skills that they will use to find success in their future careers. There’s a lot that I learned that I’m looking forward to implementing at our own Club.” 

The highlight of the trip wasn’t just the workshops and networking opportunities. The group also ventured out to explore the vibrant city of Chicago, indulging in the famous deep-dish pizza and visiting the Lincoln Park Zoo, creating new core memories they will always treasure.

The main takeaway from the conference was clear; the experience reinvigorated not just the teens but also the staff, providing fresh ideas and renewed energy for the upcoming school year.

As Middlebury’s Boys & Girls Club continues to nurture young leaders, events like the National Keystone Conference play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our community’s youth. With the skills they gained and the connections they made, these teens are poised to lead with confidence and inspire others in their journey ahead.
