April Focus: Healthy Lifestyles

This April, our Awesome Experiences blog is all about healthy lifestyles. One of the brightest highlights from the month has been our Snack Squad program, where teens discovered that eating well does not have to be boring, expensive, or complicated.

Snack Squad brought teens into the café kitchen and gave them a chance to learn real skills they can use at home. Week by week, they tried new recipes, tasted new flavors, and practiced simple cooking techniques. The goal was clear. We wanted them to feel confident making snacks that are healthy, affordable, and easy to prepare on their own, especially when parents are busy or at work.

A big part of the program focused on money. Every session included a short budgeting moment. Teens looked at the ingredients in each recipe and guessed how much they cost. Only after everyone guessed did we reveal the real prices. Small rewards went to those who were closest. It felt like a game, but it also gave teens a better sense of what their favorite foods really cost and how far a few dollars can go.

Many of the snacks they made cost less than $10. They also used ingredients that could be stretched across several different recipes. Teens saw that buying a bag of vegetables, a block of cheese, or a pack of tortillas can lead to many meals instead of just one. They left with new ideas for shopping smarter, buying in bulk, and planning ahead.

For the final class, the energy in the room shifted. Snack Squad turned into a friendly cooking competition. Each group received a $10 budget and 45 minutes to design and prepare a snack meal. Their challenge was to create something that tasted great, looked inviting, and included a balance of protein, vegetables, dairy, and other important nutrients.

Right away, the teams got to work. They chose roles, talked through ideas, and spread out across the café kitchen.

  • Group A made warm, cheesy quesadillas loaded with tasty fillings.
  • Group B created a comforting tofu noodle soup that was packed with flavor.
  • Group C blended a refreshing smoothie and paired it with an Italian mushroom turkey wrap.

When time was up, each group carefully plated their dishes and presented them to a panel of staff judges. They explained why they chose their ingredients, how they stayed within the budget, and how their meal supported a healthy lifestyle.

After the judges tasted each dish and shared feedback, a winning team was announced and received gift cards as a prize. We did not stop there. To celebrate everyone’s hard work, we ended with a small cake party and plenty of smiles. Every teen walked away as a winner, with new recipes, new skills, and new confidence.

One staff member reflected on the experience and said,

“It was awesome to see the teens take what they learned each week and apply it so thoughtfully during the final competition.”

A teen participant shared what the program meant to them,

“I enjoyed learning new snacks I could make for myself at home. I really liked the challenge of using leftover ingredients, and I did not know I could make such good food with not a lot of money.”

Snack Squad shows how powerful small changes can be. With a few simple ingredients, a basic budget, and a little creativity, teens learned that they can care for their health, stretch their dollars, and enjoy food that feels fun and satisfying.

As we continue our April focus on healthy lifestyles, Snack Squad stands out as a great example of what happens when young people are given the tools and space to learn, experiment, and grow in the kitchen.
