BGC News: Where Our Kids Become Reporters

This spring, something exciting has been buzzing through our Middlebury Club. It’s the BGC News!

Instead of just reading about what’s going on, a group of our juniors and cadets got the inside scoop by becoming reporters themselves. From covering active programs to peeking behind the scenes to highlighting special events, BGC News has been everywhere.

Learning the Newsroom Ropes

Our BGC News team didn’t just point and shoot a camera. They learned how to:

  • Take and edit photos that really capture the moment
  • Create and lead their own interviews
  • Design eye-catching layouts
  • Publish in-house newsletters for everyone at the Club

Every week, their work went up on the walls for all our members to read, enjoy, and be proud of. Walking past their newsletters, you could feel the excitement and ownership they had over every story.

Voices from Behind the Scenes

From a staff member:

“Seeing these members come up with all of their own ideas and finding a way to execute those ideas was one of my personal highlights of the program. It was not about saying, ‘No, we can’t do that,’ but about letting them find a way to bring their goals to life.”

Our role wasn’t to limit their creativity; it was to cheer them on, offer guidance, and then step back and watch them shine.

From a BGC News member:

“One of my favorite parts was getting to have more of a voice in Club. I got to work with my friends as a team, each of us with our own roles, to come up with a newsletter that is fun to read for everyone.”

BGC News didn’t just teach technical skills. It helped members find their voice, practice leadership, and learn what it means to be part of a creative team.

A Trip to the Pros

To top it all off, the BGC News crew got to take a special field trip to WFRN. They toured a real radio news station, met professionals in the field, and saw how the work they’ve been doing at Club connects to real-world careers.

For many of them, it’s the first time they’ve gotten to step into a working newsroom. We can’t wait to see how this trip will inspire their next big ideas.

A Program That Puts Members in the Lead

BGC News is a program we run every year, and it does more than fill our walls with newsletters. It:

  • Puts members in charge of the story
  • Builds confidence and communication skills
  • Encourages creativity and problem-solving
  • Shows them that their ideas matter

Most of all, it gives our members a chance to lead and to see themselves as creators, not just consumers.

We’re so proud of everything this year’s BGC News team has accomplished, and we’re already excited to see what next year’s reporters will dream up.
